Foghorn Flowers started with a tomato plant on the streets of North Beach.
Over 17 years ago, my gramma decided she wanted to grow something. With no land and little gardening experience, she walked up and down three flights of stairs each day to care for her potted tomato —out to the sidewalk for sun, back inside for safekeeping. That small act stuck with me.
I signed us up for a community garden through SF Rec & Park’s Urban Agriculture Program and two years later, we got our plot—barely the size of a compact car. We started growing. First food, then flowers. That’s where I learned that even the smallest spaces can bloom abundantly if you’re willing to put in the effort.
Gramma can’t make the climb anymore, but I still tend the plot at Michelangelo Community Garden, along with a sidewalk bed closer to her. These spaces keep teaching me how to grow with intention, give back what you take, and make beauty out of whatever you have. That mindset guides everything I grow now.
It all began with a tomato plant.
In 2023, a friend offered her backyard as a growing space—sandy soil, partial sun, and full of potential. We built beds, planted, and by early 2024, the first blooms arrived. That’s when the real learning—and failing—began. I kept showing up, inspired and coached by others who have come before me. Foghorn Flowers is the result of passion, grit, community support, and the belief that small steps, taken consistently, can lead to something meaningful.
My goal is simple: to grow beautiful local flowers in San Francisco that bring joy to the community—and to show that yes, you can start a flower farm in a backyard (or a patchwork of borrowed ones) if you’re willing to work for it.
